Speed Dating in Research
As someone who operates a research lab I receive a lot of inquiries that are cold contacts from undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-docs about working in my lab. Below are some tips for making effective first contact with a potential research supervisor. Do your homework and investigate the institution, department, programs offered, and the faculty members who supervise graduate students. Identify several potential professors that do research that you think is interesting. Come up with a list of reasons why you would like to work in a particular lab or area of research. Define what it is that you can offer the lab in terms of skills, educational background, experience, work ethic, etc. Explain why you are interested in working with this particular professor. Explain what skills you can bring to the table. Indicate that you are exploring options for graduate programs that have a particular start date e. September and ask whether the professor has space and funding available to support a graduate student at that time.

‘Matchmaking and speed-dating’ brings researchers together.
Social bonding is fundamental to human society, and romantic interest involves an important type of bonding. Speed dating research paradigms offer both high external validity and experimental control for studying romantic interest in real-world settings. While previous studies focused on the effect of social and personality factors on romantic interest, the role of non-verbal interaction has been little studied in initial romantic interest, despite being commonly viewed as a crucial factor.

Twelve years ago, I sat down at this keyboard and wrote a column about the day Tom and I took our son to his first day of Kindergarten. You spend a couple of hours on each college campus sizing it up and asking questions. Then you decide if you can envision yourself spending four years with that college. My college decision was simple. Out-of-state tuition was financially impossible, so I went to the best in-state school that offered the best scholarship package.
Not only is it much more competitive to get into a college, there are also more than 5, different colleges in the United States. Choosing one feels overwhelming. Nestled into the heart of the city, the campus feels like its own little world full of gorgeous Gothic architecture, a bell tower piercing up into the sky, and lush green courtyards around every corner. The dining hall looked like a scene straight out of a Harry Potter movie, with students lining long dark tables surrounded by soaring stained glass windows.
The buildings with classrooms and state-of-the-art laboratories were impressive, too. But Tom and I were surprised to see that dorms look and smell the same way they did two decades ago when we were undergrads.

Teaching research methodology to our new PhD fellows is my favourite class. Doing so in small groups, as is often the case in our PhD programmes and professional training, allows me to engage in creative and innovative educational formats. Every time I teach, I try a new set-up or tweak things a little. But of course, some formats have proven their value over time, so they become permanent fixtures every year. In an interactive classroom setting, we invite our PhDs to pitch their research idea to a few staff members in minute 1-on-1 meetings.
For staff members, the game is different. They have no choice — they simply talk to whomever sits opposite of them — but students can form strategies to ensure they meet their ideal set of professors. Experience tells us that both staff and students enjoy the exercise. For the students, the short meetings offer quick feedback at an early stage of their PhD, in a friendly constructive way. They are explicitly introduced to the research fields of the institute. It challenges my ideas and with the limited time we are forced to be concise in our talks to convey our ideas.

Although just one and a half days long a packed agenda ensured it was intensive. The sessions based around qualitative methods focused on data analysis, the publication process, and our research contributions.
