These waiters all deserve a raise, a paid vacation, and a huge tip. There was a line of two-person booths along the wall when you first walk in, and there were two guys sitting by themselves in two different booths. This girl comes in and walks up to the first booth, says hi to the guy, and sits down. Eventually a different girl shows up for a date with the guy at the first booth.
The three of them went off into the casino but came back for drinks a few times. Early in the morning, the second guy came back for a shot and said he had a couple of hours to kill before his plane left. We got to chatting and he told me he had just broken up with his girlfriend because he suspected she had been having sex with his friend when he couldn’t find either of them for an hour. So don’t look so sheepish if you’ve ever added your friend’s aunt’s step-brother’s son or a random bartender or significant other of a friend you haven’t spoken to since high school to one of your online networks—you aren’t alone! We’ve actually been taught that this makes us good networkers—even thought it overlooks quality in favor of quantity—because the objective is to cast as wide a net as possible when building a network.

Swapping out their rubber sandals for stiletto heels, they smeared on globs of lip gloss and flung on leather jackets. After a second wardrobe change, they were ready for their appointments at a modeling agency on the ground floor. Same people: two very different personas. A short elevator ride later, as I sat in on a meeting with a group of Tinder executives, it became clear that the quick-change act I had just witnessed downstairs, though unrelated to Tinder, still had a lot to do with what was going on upstairs.

In this paper we construct a relative time scale for the origin and radiation of major lineages of the true fungi, using the 18S ribosomal RNA gene sequence data of 37 fungal species, and then calibrate the time scale using fossil evidence. Of the sequences, 28 were from the literature or data banks and the remaining 9 are new. To estimate the order of origin of fungal lineages we reconstructed the phylogeny of the fungi using aligned sequence data. To compensate for the differences in nucleotide substitution rates among various fungal lineages, we normalized the pairwise substitution data before estimating the relative timing of fungal divergences.
We divided the fungi into nine groups. We then calculated the average percent substitution for each group, and also the average for all the groups, for the time period beginning when the fungi diverged from a common ancestor and ending at the present. We used the ratios of group-specific percent substitutions to the average percent substitution to normalize our pairwise substitution data matrix. To infer the relative timing of the origin of lineages we superimposed the normalized percentages of nucleotide substitutions onto the parsimony-based phylogeny.

18 Things I’ve Learned After Going on Over 20 Dates
Dating is many things: Fun , funny, exciting, enlightening, and sometimes awkward, repetitive, and laborious. One thing it isn’t? It’s the opposite of simple. But what else should we expect from the somewhat colloquial definition of dating that Merriam-Webster defines as “the series of social engagements shared by a couple looking to get married,” which also defines a single date as “a romantic appointment. Of course, we have a much more fluid understanding of the term today, which simultaneously makes it more fun and less consequential and rigid—but it also tends to complicate things further.
When I started counting how many first dates I’d been on in one year alone, I lost count at

Chris McKinlay was folded into a cramped fifth-floor cubicle in UCLA’s math sciences building, lit by a single bulb and the glow from his monitor. The subject: large-scale data processing and parallel numerical methods. While the computer chugged, he clicked open a second window to check his OkCupid inbox. McKinlay, a lanky year-old with tousled hair, was one of about 40 million Americans looking for romance through websites like Match. He’d sent dozens of cutesy introductory messages to women touted as potential matches by OkCupid’s algorithms.
Most were ignored; he’d gone on a total of six first dates. On that early morning in June , his compiler crunching out machine code in one window, his forlorn dating profile sitting idle in the other, it dawned on him that he was doing it wrong. He’d been approaching online matchmaking like any other user.
Instead, he realized, he should be dating like a mathematician. OkCupid was founded by Harvard math majors in , and it first caught daters’ attention because of its computational approach to matchmaking. Members answer droves of multiple-choice survey questions on everything from politics, religion, and family to love, sex, and smartphones.
The closer to percent—mathematical soul mate—the better. But mathematically, McKinlay’s compatibility with women in Los Angeles was abysmal. OkCupid’s algorithms use only the questions that both potential matches decide to answer, and the match questions McKinlay had chosen—more or less at random—had proven unpopular.
